The Biggest Casinos in Canada

Graphic titled “The Biggest Casinos in Canada” featuring an illuminated casino resort, a roulette wheel, casino chips and a red maple leaf.

The biggest casino in Canada is the Casino de Montréal, whose gaming floor covers more than 526,000 square feet — the largest in the country. But “biggest” depends on what you measure: floor area, the number of slot machines, the number of table games, or the size of the whole resort. This guide ranks the country’s largest land-based casinos by gaming-floor size and lists the verified numbers behind each one, so you can compare them on facts rather than marketing claims.

The five venues covered below are the Casino de Montréal in Quebec, Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, Casino Rama Resort and Caesars Windsor in Ontario, and River Rock Casino Resort in British Columbia. For a full directory of every venue in the country, see our guide to land-based casinos in Canada.

How casino size is measured in Canada

There is no single official measure of casino size, which is why rankings disagree. A venue can be the “biggest” on one metric and mid-sized on another. Four measures are commonly used:

  • Gaming-floor area — the square footage of the space where gambling takes place. This is the most common basis for “largest casino” claims and the one used to rank the table below.
  • Slot machines — the count of electronic gaming machines, including reel slots and video terminals.
  • Table games — the number of live dealer tables such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat and poker. Some venues also run electronic table terminals, which are sometimes counted separately.
  • Total resort footprint — the entire complex, including hotels, restaurants, theatres and parking. This figure is far larger than the gaming floor and is often quoted to make a property sound bigger than its gambling space actually is.

The biggest casinos in Canada, ranked by gaming floor

The table below ranks Canada’s largest casinos by gaming-floor square footage, with slot and table counts and the year each opened. Counts are approximate because operators regularly reconfigure their floors; where sources differ, the figures reflect the most recent verified range.

Casino de Montréal — Canada’s largest casino

The Casino de Montréal is the largest casino in Canada by gaming-floor area, with more than 526,000 square feet spread across a multi-level building on Notre-Dame Island in Jean-Drapeau Park. It opened on 9 October 1993 and is run by the Société des casinos du Québec, a subsidiary of the provincial crown corporation Loto-Québec.

The floor holds more than 3,000 slot machines and over 100 gaming and electronic tables, plus a 26-table poker room and a group-gaming area called The Zone. The property draws several million visitors a year, which makes it one of the busiest casinos in the country as well as the biggest. It began far smaller — roughly 1,200 slots and 65 tables at opening — and grew through expansions in the mid-1990s.

Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort — the biggest in Ontario

Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort has the largest gaming floor in Ontario at about 200,000 square feet, and it holds more slot machines and table games than any other Canadian casino: more than 3,500 slots and over 130 tables. It opened on 10 June 2004 overlooking the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls.

The casino is owned by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) and has been operated by Mohegan, a United States tribal-gaming company, since 2019. While its gaming floor is smaller than Montréal’s, the surrounding resort is vast — the whole complex spans roughly 2.5 million square feet, including a hotel, a 1,500-seat theatre and multiple restaurants.

Casino Rama Resort — Ontario’s First Nations gaming resort

Casino Rama Resort is one of Canada’s largest casinos by floor area, at around 192,000 square feet, and it is the only commercial casino in Ontario located on First Nations land. It sits on the Rama First Nation near Orillia, about 90 minutes north of Toronto, and opened on 31 July 1996.

The floor carries roughly 2,500 slot machines and about 110 table games, alongside a hotel and a well-known concert venue. The casino is owned by OLG in partnership with the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, and operation has been contracted to Gateway Casinos & Entertainment since 2018.

Caesars Windsor — the border-city landmark

Caesars Windsor is one of the largest casinos in Ontario, with a gaming floor of about 100,000 square feet on the Detroit River waterfront in Windsor, directly across from Michigan. It carries more than 2,200 slot machines and over 80 table games.

The property was Ontario’s first commercial casino, opening in a temporary location in 1994 before the permanent resort opened on 29 July 1998; it was rebranded from Casino Windsor to Caesars Windsor in 2008. It is owned by OLG and operated under licence by Caesars Entertainment, and it includes two hotel towers with about 758 rooms combined and the 5,000-seat Colosseum theatre.

River Rock Casino Resort — British Columbia’s largest

River Rock Casino Resort is the largest casino in British Columbia, located in Richmond next to Vancouver International Airport. Its gaming floor of about 70,000 square feet is smaller than the Ontario and Quebec giants, but it anchors one of the biggest entertainment resorts on the West Coast. It opened on 25 June 2004.

The floor offers roughly 1,150 electronic gaming machines — a mix of slots and electronic table terminals — and about 80 live table games, along with a poker room. The resort is regulated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) and operated by Great Canadian Entertainment; in October 2025 the Snuneymuxw and Musqueam First Nations announced an agreement to acquire the property. River Rock also includes a 396-room hotel and a show theatre.

How the biggest casinos compare on slots and tables

The ranking changes depending on the metric. Casino de Montréal leads on gaming-floor area, but Niagara Fallsview leads on both slot machines and table games. Here is how the five compare:

  • Most gaming-floor area: Casino de Montréal (~526,000 sq ft).
  • Most slot machines: Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort (3,500+).
  • Most table games: Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort (130+).
  • Largest in Western Canada: River Rock Casino Resort, British Columbia.
  • Oldest of the five: Casino de Montréal, opened 1993.

In other words, if “biggest” means floor space, Montréal wins; if it means the most machines and tables to play, Fallsview wins. Both claims are correct on their own terms.

Why the biggest casino is not the same in every province

Casino size varies by province because each province — not the federal government — licenses and runs its own gambling under the Criminal Code. Quebec’s gaming is managed by Loto-Québec, Ontario’s by OLG, and British Columbia’s by BCLC, and each sets its own rules on venue size, machine counts and operators. That is why the largest casino in one province can be far bigger or smaller than the largest in another.

This provincial system also shapes who runs each venue: some are operated directly by a crown corporation’s subsidiary, others by private companies under licence, and some on First Nations land in partnership with the host nation. For the legal background, see our overview of gambling laws in Canada, and for how these venues came to exist, the history of gambling in Canada.

Common mistakes when comparing casino sizes

Size comparisons are easy to get wrong because operators and travel sites quote different numbers. The most common errors are:

  • Confusing the resort with the gaming floor. A “2.5 million square foot” figure usually describes the whole complex — hotel, theatre and parking included — not the space where you actually gamble.
  • Relying on outdated counts. Slot and table numbers change as floors are reconfigured, so a figure from an older review may no longer match today’s floor.
  • Mixing live and electronic tables. Some sources add electronic table terminals to the live-table count, which inflates the total and makes venues look larger than comparable casinos.
  • Comparing Canadian casinos to Las Vegas. Even Canada’s biggest casino is modest next to the largest US and Asian resorts; a “largest in Canada” claim is not a “largest in the world” claim.
  • Assuming biggest means best. Floor size says nothing about the odds, the atmosphere or whether a venue suits you — a larger floor simply means more machines and tables in one building.

A note on responsible gambling

This article is informational and describes the size of these venues only; it is not a recommendation to visit or to gamble, and the size of a casino has no bearing on your chances of winning. The legal gambling age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
